Earthworms as Invasive Species in Latin America
November 14-18, 2005
San Juan, Puerto Rico

Sponsored by the USDA Forest Service
International Institute of Tropical Forestry (IITF)
and organized by the Puerto Rico Conservation Foundation

This year’s meeting will be focused on the ecology and taxonomy of earthworms in Latin-America, with the general theme of earthworms as invasive species. During a three-day symposium, we will evaluate the state of earthworm ecology and taxonomy in Latin-America with particular emphasis on the importance of exotic vs. native earthworms and their effects on ecosystem processes and services. Activities will include scientific research presentations (i.e., invited and contributed talks and posters), workshops, and a demonstration on vermi-composting techniques.

Scientists, students and managers interested in earthworm ecology, taxonomy and vermi-composting and working in Latin-American countries are encouraged to present their scientific contributions as talks or posters and participate in workshop discussions and activities. The workshops will focus on the following topics:
  • potential cross-site studies / experiments
  • potential synthesis efforts
  • proposal writing and potential funding agencies in Latin-America

A tour to the Luquillo Experimental Forest and the Caribbean National Forest in the town of Luquillo is scheduled for the fourth day of the meeting. The symposium will be immediately followed by an earthworm taxonomy course led by world renowned taxonomists.

All presentations (posters and talks) and the main findings of the workshops will be published into a symposium proceedings volume or as a special issue of a scientific journal.
